a prolonged absence of something specified
You said it had been like this for three
years—no water, no rainfall. We drove
to the restaurant like noble
Californians, I saw the strawberries
gleaming against the green.
Water had never been
so important to me.
fall
It
happens
to the
very
best
of us.
The long
haul, the
hours—
the thoughts
that
rake
us through
and
through.
I’m not
one to
fall
in love
like a
leaf
falls from
a tree,
slowly
and
with
purpose.
ufo
A singular unidentified
flying object catches
my sight
descending
like Jesus might
from the heavens.
I freeze
feeling like a
snowflake, unimportant
and afraid,
as it directs its
path straight
for me.
It hovers near,
and from its belly a creature
slithers and glides
gracefully to where
I have been standing.
It rips out my
heart and,
in a language I understand,
tells me “this
is it.”
I throw my hat
on the ground
and move on.
